community music classes

“”If you take a singing class from Kate Hammett-Vaughan, you get to learn from a gifted vocalist and musician; a gutsy, talented, and conscientious teacher who’s great at making complex musical concepts accessible and empowering her students to take risks; and a kind and supportive human being. Plus you’ll have fun!” —Donaleen S.

Kate teaches general interest music classes at her home studio and is also available to travel to teach at schools or community gathering places. Additionally, her private studio group classes and community groups are perfect for singers of all levels.

VOXYmusic, the Vancouver-based improvising vocal workshop series, was founded in 2007 by singer/performers Kate Hammett-Vaughan and Carol Sawyer. VOXY’s mission is to celebrate the human voice, and to inspire singers of various musical and cultural traditions to explore a meeting place that is based in improvisation.

Going into its 10th season, VOXYmusic is a no-budget/ self-funded community vocal exploration group. With the generous help of Vancouver Community College, grunt gallery, Playwrights Theatre Centre, and The Western Front, VOXYmusic has facilitated 10 highly successful series of workshops that investigate vocal improvisation. Led by professionals from the music, dance, theatre, spoken word and visual art realms, these workshops have created a space for singers with a wide variety of musical backgrounds and levels of experience to experiment, take risks, and extend their vocabulary as improvising performers.

Watch this space for the 2017 dates and location! We accept donations at each class to help pay the workshop facilitators. Recommended donation of $10 per workshop but contribute what you can.
